Eavestrough has one job: collect the water coming off the roof and put it somewhere other than your foundation. When it sags, leaks at the joints or overflows, water drops straight down beside the wall, soaks the soil and finds its way into the basement. In winter that same overflow freezes into icicles, and the weight pulls the trough away from the fascia. Over a few seasons, the splashing also stains siding and rots the bottom edge of wood trim and decks.
Undersized eavestrough is common on older homes, and on newer homes with big, steep roofs that funnel a lot of water into one corner. We look at roof area, pitch and where valleys concentrate the flow, then size the trough and downspouts to suit. Soffit and fascia get the same attention, since rotten fascia boards and blocked soffit vents cause trouble for the roof above. Downspouts are placed so water is carried away from walkways and driveways instead of freezing into a sheet of ice by the door.
Why James Roofing
What a proper eavestrough job includes
-
Formed on site
Aluminum eavestrough is rolled to the exact length of each run, so there are no joints along the straight sections to leak.
-
Correct slope and hangers
We set a steady pitch toward each downspout and use closely spaced hidden hangers to carry snow and ice.
-
Downspouts that discharge away
Downspouts are sized for the roof area and extended so water lands well clear of the foundation.
-
Soffit and fascia together
Vented soffit lets the attic breathe, and aluminum fascia capping protects the wood the eavestrough hangs from.

What our customers say
5.0
- 5 out of 5 stars
I am beyond happy with the work that James Roofing did at my rental property. I had water damage from an incompatible roofing system that was put on by the previous company. From the beginning of my project, James was happy to answer any questions I had about proposed solutions and always made sure I understood all options available. The job was done when he said it would be, and on time. The crew was very polite with my tenants and cleaned up 100% after their work was done. I will be calling James Roofing again when my main roof needs replaced.

Honestly great experience from start to finish. I got the run around from a few other roofers before finding James Roofing. He was prompt in returning my phone calls, worked me in a few days earlier than originally planned and fixed the leak in my roof immediately and for a fair price. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for good, honest work

How It Works
Installing your new eavestrough
-
Measure and plan
We measure each run, check the fascia and plan where the downspouts should go.
-
Prep the edge
The old troughs come off, rotten fascia boards are replaced and new soffit goes in where needed.
-
Form and hang
Eavestrough is formed on site, hung on hidden hangers and pitched toward the outlets.
-
Downspouts and test
Downspouts and extensions go on, then we run water through to confirm every run drains.
Choosing eavestrough, soffit and fascia
Sizing: 5-inch or 6-inch
Most houses in our area have 5-inch K-style eavestrough, which handles an average roof well. Larger or steeper roofs, and corners where two valleys empty into the same spot, often need 6-inch trough with larger 3 by 4 inch downspouts. Going up a size usually costs less than living with overflow and a damp basement. Downspout placement matters as much as size, and a long run often needs an outlet at each end.
Why seamless aluminum
Sectional gutters joined every few metres have seams that open up with freeze-thaw movement. Seamless aluminum is formed from a coil into a single piece for each run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Aluminum doesn’t rust, comes in a wide range of colours and is light enough to hang cleanly from the fascia. Hidden hangers screw through the trough into the fascia board, which holds far better than the old spike-and-ferrule method.
Soffit and fascia
Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang. Vented aluminum or vinyl soffit is where your attic draws in fresh air, which helps prevent condensation and ice dams. Blocked or painted-over soffit vents are one of the most common causes of attic moisture we find. Fascia is the board along the roof edge that the eavestrough hangs from. We replace any rotten wood and cap it in aluminum so it never needs painting again.
Colour and style
Eavestrough, downspouts, soffit and fascia come in colours to match or contrast with your siding, trim and windows. We’ll bring samples so you can see them against the house before you choose.
Questions
Eavestrough, Soffit and Fascia FAQs
Still unsure about something? Call us and talk to someone who actually works on roofs.
(289) 683-9727What's the difference between eavestrough and gutters?
They're the same thing. Eavestrough is the common Canadian term, and gutter is more common in the US. Either way, it's the channel that collects water at the roof edge.
How long does eavestrough installation take?
Most homes are done in a day. If fascia boards need replacing or new soffit is going in too, it can take longer. We'll give you a timeline with your quote.
Should I replace soffit and fascia at the same time?
If they're damaged or rotten, yes. The eavestrough hangs from the fascia, so fixing it later means taking the new trough down again. Doing everything together is cleaner and usually costs less overall.
Where should my downspouts drain?
Onto ground that slopes away from the house, well clear of the foundation. Some older homes have downspouts piped into the ground, and municipal rules about those connections vary, so we'll talk through the options for your property.
Do I need gutter guards with new eavestrough?
If you have trees near the house, they're worth considering. Guards cut down on cleaning and help prevent the clogs that cause overflow and ice buildup. We can install them along with your new eavestrough.
