Siding gets blamed for a lot it didn’t cause. Most of the wall leaks and rotten sheathing we find come from missing flashing over windows and doors, house wrap lapped the wrong way, or panels nailed so tight they buckle in July and crack in January. Those details decide whether a siding job lasts decades or starts failing in a few years. Plenty of houses around Hamilton and Toronto also have older aluminum or wood siding hiding years of moisture damage that only shows once it comes off.
We start by removing the old cladding and looking at what’s underneath. Soft sheathing gets replaced, a weather-resistive barrier goes on with every lap shedding water downward, and windows and doors get proper head flashing. Then the siding goes up according to the manufacturer’s instructions for that product, so it can expand and contract the way it was designed to. Where walls meet the roof, we coordinate the siding with kickout flashing so roof water can’t run behind it.
Why James Roofing
Details that make siding last
-
Sound walls underneath
Damaged sheathing is replaced and a weather-resistive barrier is installed before any siding goes on.
-
Flashing at every opening
Windows, doors, vents and roof-to-wall joints get proper flashing so water is directed out, not in.
-
Room to move
Panels are fastened to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction, which matters with Ontario's temperature swings.
-
Clean trim work
Corners, J-channel and window trim are cut and fitted carefully, because that's what everyone sees from the street.

What our customers say

- 5 out of 5 stars
I am beyond happy with the work that James Roofing did at my rental property. I had water damage from an incompatible roofing system that was put on by the previous company. From the beginning of my project, James was happy to answer any questions I had about proposed solutions and always made sure I understood all options available. The job was done when he said it would be, and on time. The crew was very polite with my tenants and cleaned up 100% after their work was done. I will be calling James Roofing again when my main roof needs replaced.

Honestly great experience from start to finish. I got the run around from a few other roofers before finding James Roofing. He was prompt in returning my phone calls, worked me in a few days earlier than originally planned and fixed the leak in my roof immediately and for a fair price. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for good, honest work

Vinyl, fibre cement, aluminum or steel?
Vinyl siding
Vinyl is the most common siding in Southern Ontario. It’s cost-effective, never needs painting and comes in a wide range of colours and profiles. It moves a lot with temperature, so each nail goes in the centre of the slot and is left slightly loose. Thicker panels resist wind and impact better, and insulated vinyl with a foam backing adds stiffness and a little extra insulation. Panels also need small gaps at corners and trim so they can slide as they move.
Fibre cement siding
Fibre cement is made from cement, sand and wood fibre. It looks like painted wood, stands up to impact, won’t melt beside a barbecue and doesn’t burn. It’s heavier and takes more labour to install, and it needs proper clearance above roofs and grade so it doesn’t wick up water. It’s a good fit if you want the look of wood lap siding without the upkeep. Most fibre cement comes factory painted, which holds colour longer than painting on site.
Aluminum and steel siding
Metal siding is durable, fire-resistant and suits modern designs as well as commercial buildings. Steel resists dents and works well on high-traffic walls and outbuildings. Aluminum is lighter and won’t rust. Both come with factory finishes, including vertical panels and board-and-batten styles. Steel also stands up well to hail and the odd stray hockey puck.
What affects the price
Cost depends on the material, wall area, the number of windows and corners, height and access, how much old siding comes off and the condition of the sheathing underneath. A 2-storey house with several gables takes more time and staging than a bungalow. Adding rigid insulation board under the siding is an option that adds to both cost and comfort. We’ll explain every line of your quote.
Questions
Siding FAQs
Still unsure about something? Call us and talk to someone who actually works on roofs.
(289) 683-9727Can new siding go over old siding?
Sometimes, but we usually recommend removing it. Covering the old layer hides rotten sheathing and moisture problems, and it creates depth issues around windows and trim. Stripping it lets us fix what's underneath.
What's the best siding for Ontario weather?
Vinyl, fibre cement, aluminum and steel all perform well here when they're installed properly. The best choice depends on your budget, the look you want and how much maintenance you're willing to do. We'll walk you through the trade-offs.
How long does siding installation take?
A typical house takes several days to a couple of weeks, depending on size, material and how much repair is needed underneath. Fibre cement takes longer than vinyl. We'll give you a schedule with the quote.
Why does vinyl siding warp?
Usually because it was nailed too tight and can't expand in the heat, or because sunlight reflecting off a neighbour's windows overheats it. Proper fastening and the right panel thickness prevent most warping.
Can you match siding on just part of my house?
We'll try to source a matching profile and colour. Older siding fades, so an exact match isn't always possible. Sometimes redoing a full wall gives a cleaner result than a patch.
