Gutter Guards That Keep Your Eavestrough Flowing

A clogged eavestrough overflows, rots fascia and feeds ice dams. We install guards matched to the trees around your house, so water gets in and debris stays out.

Less ladder time, fewer overflows

James Roofing installs gutter guards on new and existing eavestrough across Hamilton, Toronto, Niagara, Halton and Peel. We fit mesh and cover systems to your roofline, clean out the troughs first, and make sure the eavestrough underneath is sloped and sound. Call (289) 683-9727 or request a free estimate and we’ll recommend the right guard for your house. Guards can go on with new eavestrough or be added to a system that’s already up.

The mature neighbourhoods across Southern Ontario are full of maples, oaks and evergreens that drop something nearly every season. Spring brings blossoms and maple keys, fall brings leaves, and pines shed needles all year. Eavestrough that fills up overflows during storms, sending water down the wall and toward the foundation. Wet debris also holds moisture against the fascia, then freezes solid in winter, adding weight and helping ice build at the eaves.

Not every guard works on every house. Pine needles and shingle grit pass through some screens and clog others. A guard that suits a bungalow under a big oak may be wrong for a 2-storey house with a steep roof that sheds water fast. We look at the trees, the roof and the existing eavestrough before recommending anything. We also check that the downspouts are large enough, since a guard won’t help if the outlet is the bottleneck.

Why James Roofing

Why our installs work

  • Matched to your trees

Micro-mesh for needles and seeds, sturdier screens or covers for broad leaves. The debris decides the guard.

  • Troughs checked first

We clean out the eavestrough, fix sagging sections and correct the slope before anything goes on top.

  • Secured for snow and wind

Guards are fastened so they stay put under a snow load and don't lift in strong gusts.

  • Shingles left alone

Guards mount to the eavestrough and fascia without prying up shingles or breaking their seal.

I am beyond happy with the work that James Roofing did at my rental property. I had water damage from an incompatible roofing system that was put on by the previous company. From the beginning of my project, James was happy to answer any questions I had about proposed solutions and always made sure I understood all options available. The job was done when he said it would be, and on time. The crew was very polite with my tenants and cleaned up 100% after their work was done. I will be calling James Roofing again when my main roof needs replaced.

Honestly great experience from start to finish. I got the run around from a few other roofers before finding James Roofing. He was prompt in returning my phone calls, worked me in a few days earlier than originally planned and fixed the leak in my roof immediately and for a fair price. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for good, honest work

How It Works

How we install gutter guards

  1. Check the trees

We look at what's growing near the roof and what's been clogging your eavestrough.

  2. Clean and repair

Troughs are emptied and flushed, downspouts cleared, and loose or sagging sections fixed.

  3. Fit the guards

Guards are cut to length and secured along every run, including corners and below valleys.

  4. Flow test

We run water off the roof edge to confirm it gets into the trough and out the downspouts.

Gutter guard types and the debris they handle

Micro-mesh guards

A fine stainless steel mesh over an aluminum frame. It blocks pine needles, maple keys and shingle grit while still letting water through. It’s our usual recommendation for homes near evergreens or with heavy seed drop. Pollen and fine dust can film over the mesh with time, and a quick brush or rinse clears it. Good systems use a rigid frame so the mesh doesn’t sag under wet leaves or snow.

Perforated aluminum screens

Rigid aluminum panels with punched holes. They’re strong, stand up to snow load and do a good job keeping out broad leaves from maples and oaks. Smaller debris like needles can slip through the holes, so these suit yards where leafy trees are the main problem. They’re also one of the more budget-friendly options.

Solid hood covers

These rely on surface tension: water follows the curved front edge into the trough while leaves slide off. They work well under big deciduous trees, but on a steep roof in a downpour some water can shoot past the edge. Roof pitch and placement matter with this style. Hoods are the most visible type from the street, so colour matching with the eavestrough counts.

Gutter guards and ice

No guard stops ice dams on its own. Ice dams start with heat escaping from the attic. What a guard does is keep the trough from filling with wet debris that freezes into a solid block. If your eaves ice up every winter, we’ll look at attic insulation and ventilation too. In late winter, it’s worth checking that ice hasn’t packed on top of the guard near the downspouts.

Questions

Gutter Guards FAQs

Still unsure about something? Call us and talk to someone who actually works on roofs.

(289) 683-9727

Will I ever have to clean my eavestrough again?

Far less often, but not never. Most guards need an occasional check and a light brushing or rinse of the surface. Scooping wet leaves out by hand every fall becomes a thing of the past.

Can you install gutter guards on my existing eavestrough?

Usually, yes, if the troughs are in good shape and properly sloped. If they're sagging, leaking or undersized, we'll recommend fixing or replacing them first so the guards sit on a sound system.

Do gutter guards cause ice dams?

No. Ice dams come from attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. A good guard helps by keeping frozen debris out of the trough, so meltwater has somewhere to go.

What's the best gutter guard for pine needles?

Micro-mesh is generally the best choice for pine needles and other fine debris, because the openings are too small for needles to get through. Screens with larger holes tend to trap needles and clog.

Do gutter guards handle heavy rain?

Good guards let through a lot of water, but with some designs a very steep roof in a downpour can push water past the edge. We factor in your roof pitch and eavestrough size when choosing a guard.
