One crew for the roof and the ground below it

James Roofing provides snow removal for homes and businesses across Hamilton, Toronto, Niagara, Halton and Peel. We clear residential driveways and walkways, plow and salt commercial lots, and take heavy snow and ice dams off roofs. Call (289) 683-9727 or request a free estimate and we’ll set up a seasonal contract or a winter plan for your property.

Winter is when roofs take the most abuse, and it’s when we’re up on them the most. Lake-effect squalls can drop a lot of snow in a short time, and freeze-thaw cycles build ice dams along the eaves. Because we’re roofers first, we know how to get snow off a roof without tearing shingles, bending eavestrough or gouging the membrane on a flat roof. We also know where vents, skylights and eavestrough sit under the snow, so nothing gets buried or broken.

The same crew keeps the ground clear. For homeowners, that means a cleared driveway and walkway after a snowfall, so you can get to work and nobody slips on the way to the door. For property managers, it means plowed lots, salted entrances and one contractor who understands both the parking lot and the roof over the units. If we spot ice building at your eaves while we’re on site, we’ll tell you before it turns into a leak. One call covers your winter.

I am beyond happy with the work that James Roofing did at my rental property. I had water damage from an incompatible roofing system that was put on by the previous company. From the beginning of my project, James was happy to answer any questions I had about proposed solutions and always made sure I understood all options available. The job was done when he said it would be, and on time. The crew was very polite with my tenants and cleaned up 100% after their work was done. I will be calling James Roofing again when my main roof needs replaced.

Honestly great experience from start to finish. I got the run around from a few other roofers before finding James Roofing. He was prompt in returning my phone calls, worked me in a few days earlier than originally planned and fixed the leak in my roof immediately and for a fair price. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for good, honest work

How It Works

Getting set up before the first storm

  1. Site visit

We look at the driveway, walkways or lot and note obstacles, drains and where snow can be piled.

  2. Written agreement

You get an agreement that spells out what's cleared, salting, and the snowfall that triggers a visit.

  3. Winter service

We clear and salt through the season according to the agreement.

  4. Roof checks

When snow piles up or ice dams form, we can clear the roof and check it for damage.

Clearing snow without creating new problems

Driveways and walkways

For homes, we clear driveways, walkways, steps and the path to the door. A seasonal contract sets out the snowfall depth that triggers a visit and exactly what gets cleared, so you’re not calling around in the middle of a storm. We pile snow where it won’t melt back across the driveway and refreeze overnight. We take care around garden beds, curbs and interlock so spring doesn’t start with repairs.

Commercial lots and salting

Commercial properties need lots plowed, entrances cleared and walkways salted before customers, tenants and staff arrive. We plan snow storage so piles don’t block sightlines, drains or parking spaces, and we spread salt or de-icer at rates that control ice without wasting product on dry pavement. Salting can be part of the seasonal agreement or added as needed.

Roof snow removal

Most sloped roofs handle a normal snowfall fine. Trouble comes with heavy, wet snow on flat or low-slope roofs, drifts piled against parapets and higher walls, and ice building over the eaves. We clear roofs by hand, leaving a thin layer so our tools never touch the shingles or membrane, and we work tied off to fall protection. Snow is dropped away from walkways, gas meters and vents, never on top of them.

Ice dam removal

Chipping ice dams off with hammers or picks damages shingles and eavestrough and often causes leaks of its own. We cut channels through the ice with steam so meltwater can drain, then remove the dam without hitting the roof surface. Once the weather allows, we look at the attic insulation and ventilation that caused it in the first place.

Questions

Snow Removal FAQs

Still unsure about something? Call us and talk to someone who actually works on roofs.

(289) 683-9727

Do you offer seasonal snow removal contracts?

Yes. A seasonal contract covers the whole winter for a set scope, and it's the most common choice for homeowners and businesses. We'll go over the terms, including the snowfall depth that triggers a visit and what's included, before you sign.

Do you salt driveways and parking lots?

Yes. Salting and de-icing are available for residential driveways and walkways and for commercial lots and entrances. It can be built into a seasonal agreement or added as needed.

Should I have snow removed from my roof?

Most homes don't need it after an average snowfall. It's worth calling if you have a flat or low-slope roof with heavy drifts, ice dams forming, or interior doors that suddenly start sticking, which can signal a heavy load. Please don't climb onto a snowy roof yourself.

How do you remove ice dams?

We use steam to cut through the ice instead of hammers or chisels, which crack shingles and bend eavestrough. Once the ice is cleared and meltwater can drain, we can look at what's causing the ice dams so they stop coming back.

Do you handle commercial properties?

Yes. We provide snow removal for retail plazas, offices, industrial units and multi-unit residential buildings, covering lots, walkways and entrances. We can also check and clear the roof, so one contractor looks after the property from top to bottom.
